History Skills Progression Map
Intent
Children have a keen interest in the world around them and like to explore how our world has developed. History at Beeston is about children exploring different aspects of past societies which gives them the opportunity to see how others before them have lived and influenced the past and the present. We look for all of our children to be inquisitive and eager to learn more about all aspects of the historical world. This subject is centred around investigation and children using their interpretation and enquiry skills to understand how different people and places existed in the past. Throughout school, children will develop their historical knowledge, chronological understanding and communication skills. Children will make links with different periods throughout history and use this to formulate discussions.
Implementation
Through the framework of the National Curriculum 2014, History at Beeston aims to:
- Engross children in the subject of History with exciting and engaging lessons.
- Start each lesson with a learning question that can be explored and discussed.
- Give children the chance to look deeply at the chronology of history and make comparisons across different time periods.
- Use prior knowledge as a foundation for their learning to build on. Children will explore a range of different topics during their time at Beeston and links will be made throughout their time at school.
- Provide a huge focus on vocabulary. We teach children a broad range of words and phrases relating to the topic they are studying.
- Have high expectations of work evidenced in Floor Books and Curriculum Books.
- Develop skills of enquiry, investigation and interpretation in all children.
- Use a range of primary and secondary sources to discover more about parts of the past whilst also considering a sources effectiveness and reliability.
- Allow pupils to become historians and analyse events, appreciating that it is a key part of the past.
- Enable children to develop their co-operation and communication skills by allowing plenty of opportunities for discussion and debate.
