British Values and SMSC

Intent
At Beeston Primary School we are proud of our differences and celebrate our diversity. We help pupils understand the values that support life in modern Britain and develop the confidence to contribute positively to their school and wider community.
Through our curriculum and wider school life, pupils have opportunities to develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally. We want them to reflect on their own ideas and experiences, make thoughtful choices, build respectful relationships and appreciate the range of beliefs, backgrounds and experiences within society.
Implementation
British Values and SMSC are woven through our PSHE curriculum, assemblies, lessons and enrichment opportunities. Our PSHE curriculum follows Pol-Ed and includes learning about relationships, safety, the law, responsibilities and wellbeing. Picture News and class discussions and Smart School Council help pupils consider current issues and different viewpoints.
Pupils explore the five British Values:
- Democracy: Pupils in Years 1–6 take part in the Smart School Council. The annually elected Junior Leadership Team meets with senior leaders to share pupils’ views and contribute to school improvement.
- The rule of law: Pupils learn about rules, laws, responsibilities and the importance of making safe and considerate choices.
- Individual liberty: Pupils are encouraged to express their views, make informed choices and understand their rights and responsibilities.
- Mutual respect: Pupils learn to listen to others, value difference and treat people fairly and respectfully.
- Respect for different faiths and beliefs: Pupils develop an understanding of different beliefs and ways of life, including respect for people who do not hold a faith.
Pupils also develop their understanding through leadership and participation roles, including OPAL Wombles, Anti-bullying Ambassadors, MindMate Ambassadors, Junior Leaders and Eco-warriors. All pupils are able to lead school council meetings. These opportunities help pupils take responsibility, work with others and contribute to school life.
Impact
Through our British Values and SMSC provision, pupils develop an understanding of how these principles relate to their choices, relationships and responsibilities. They learn to express their views respectfully, listen to others, appreciate different perspectives and contribute positively to their school community.
Pupils build confidence, self-esteem and resilience. They learn to reflect on their behaviour and choices, understand that mistakes and setbacks can help them grow, and develop positive habits as learners. They are encouraged to collaborate critically, creatively and with care; make safe and responsible choices online; support the happiness and wellbeing of others; and challenge themselves beyond their comfort zones.
We use pupil voice, participation and curriculum review to consider how effectively these opportunities support pupils’ personal development and sense of belonging. We want pupils to leave Beeston feeling part of their community, with the confidence and skills to make decisions, reflect on their learning, build connections and continue learning throughout their lives.
