Friday 17th July

Hello year 5, it's the final day of the term and we hope you have a wonderful summer. It has been lovely teaching you all this year and we look forward to seeing you in september.

Today we would like you to complete the daily 10 and practice your arithemtic skills. Try to complete this in 10 minutes,

Yesterday we asked you to complete an investigation into how toy cars can move. We would now like you to evaluate that investigation. Make sure you say what went well, what you could have done better and anything you noticed whilst undertaking the experiment.

Set a timer for one minutes (or use the clock). See how many times you can write your word  perfectly during that time.

As it's the last day of term, we would like you to use today to create your own game. Involve anybody from your household and try to make sure this is a game you can play outside.

Maths

Today we would like you to try complete the Maths murder mystery challenge. Below is the link to a challenge which will involve you completing different types of equations to find out clues which will help you find the missing pirate treasure. Making things move
 
Take a toy car, or any toy with wheels and give it a push on 4 different surfaces in your house or an outside space. Beforehand, write down a prediction as to which surface you think the car will go furthest on? Make sure you try it out a few times to find out.

Wednesday 15th July

Maths

Today we would like you have a go at finding equivalent fractions. Below is a puzzle which needs to be coloured in, all the boxes are equivalent to one of the fractions above. Colour in the each equivalent fraction with the correct colour above.

Remember to find an equivalent fraction you need to find the highest common factor of both the numerator and denomnator. Then you can divide both of these numbers by the highest common factor to find a fraction which is equivalent.

In English over the next few days we would like you to write a letter to your new class teacher. This letter is going to go into detail about you as a person, your likes and dislikes, what you are most looking forward to and any worries you may have going into a new class. Today we would like you to plan this, below is a template you can use to structure your plan ready to write your letter tomorrow.

Yesterday we asked you to carry out a fair test on what the best material was for an umbrella. We asked you to write down your results so that we can use them today.

We would now like you to write down your observations, what went well in your investigation, what would you change next time. Make sure you evaluate your investigation and write down anything you found that was interesting.

Wider Curriculum - Science

Umbrella
 

What is the best material for an umbrella? Today we would like you to create a fair test to test which materials are best suited to making an umbrella. From your kitchen collect some materials to test, It could be paper (kitchen roll), fabric (tea towel), metal (silver foil) or plastic (cling film). Come up with a test to decide which material would be best for an umbrella.

Remember to record your findings in a table as tomorrow we will be asking you to write down your observations and explain your findings.

Write three or more sentences that use your spelling.

 

Fun

Secret challenge - make cards with ideas of things you have to get other people to do, e.g. sing a song. Everyone chooses a card in secret. Then, you have to try to get someone to do what's on your card in the course of the day, without them knowing.

 


Monday 13th July

Welcome to your final week in year 5! We have one more week left before the summer holidays and we hope to provide you with lots of fun activities to try this week. We have all loved teaching you this year and we can't wait to see you as soon as possible.

This week in maths we are going to be doign lots of different activities which test our arithmetic skills. Today we are going to complete a daily 10 which is something we do two or three times a week within school. Complete the questions in 10 minutes. The answers are on the link below.

In our wider curriculum this week we are going to be completing a few projects to round off what has been a wonderful year. Today we would like you to look around the house for an object/item that is special to you. Once you have found this item we would like you to sketch the object focussing on the colours, shading and detail. Remember this can be any object that you have that is special for any particular reason.

Today we are going to continue working on volume and will be using our knowledge of estimating. Read through the powerpoint and work through the activities before moving onto the questions.

These are reasoning and problem solving questions so it may mean that you have to write an explanation or complete a few steps to work out the problem.

Today we are going to continue with our transition activities. We would like you to create your very own coat of arms alll about you.

This can include your name, favourite things, favourite subjects, family etc. Make sure you make it colourful to show your personality and you could even bring this into school for your teacher to display in your new classroom. Yesterday we looked at evaluating our time in year 5 and remember all the positive things that have happened to us. Today we are going to look to the future and try to give our new teacher as much information about us as we can. Below is a passport which you need to fill in with information all about you. There is a section for you to write about your strengths and your weakenesses to help your teach get to know you better.

Can you find any homophones which go with your spelling word? What do they mean? E.g. wear and where, to, too and two, their, there and they’re.
