At Beeston Primary School we adopt a synthetic approach to teaching phonics. We use both the DfE Letters and Sounds document and Pearson's Phonics Bug. Children will have their own log in details to access Active Learn with phonic, SPAG and reading based activities.

Phonics is taught daily in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 and where required for children going through school.

Parent Support to support children reading

Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 reading

At Beeston Primary School all children take home a book at the same level they are reading. Children will read with an adult in school at least once per week. All children should regularly read at home with an adult to support their growing word bank and comprehension skills. Children may use a range of reading skills and should be encouraged to draw from all of these whilst tackling reading new words.

1.Segmenting and blending all the phonemes to make a word

2.Segmenting and blending some of the phonemes and using context to know what the word is

3.Chunking longer words and segmenting and blending each part.

4.Sense checking-'did it make sense?' If not encourage them to re-read and check for their mistakes. etc

We mainly use the Oxford Reading Tree scheme and this includes; phonic fiction, phonic non-fiction moving through to the BIff, Chip and Kipper story sets.

Guided Reading

All children will take part in Guided Reading sessions throughout the week. Previously this entailed reading in a group, with an adult, as one of their carousel activities. We use the Rigby Star guided reading sets and the Bug Club sets, meaning each child will have their own text whilst reading and completing comprehension activities.

This year we are trialling a new 'Whole Class' approach to Guided Reading using dog characters to focus in on the main features of reading; Vocabulary Victor, Inference Iggy, Predicting Pip, Cassie Commentator (KS2), Author Arlo (KS2), Rex Retriever and Summarising Sheba (KS2)/Sequencing Suki (KS1).

If you are reading with your child at home, you may want to ask specific questions to help build upon these skills:
